Girl Scout scholarships for college offer an excellent opportunity for active Girl Scouts to pursue their educational goals.  A number of scholarships for Girl Scouts are available each year. Below are some of them, but there are many other types of scholarships such as patriotic, military,  leadership and community based scholarships which acomplished Girl Scouts should also take the time to apply to since these are the exact skills learned from Girl Scouting.  We have included a few of the most notable ones.

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes awards young leaders who make a difference through courage and leadership in public service. Due to their commitment to leadership and public service, Girl Scouts are excellent candidates to apply for these awards. Applicants must be nominated by an adult. 10 winners are selected each year to receive $2,000 to assist them in their service work of pursuit of higher education. The deadline to apply for this award is April 30th.

The Youth Exchange Scholarship Opportunities awards are offered through the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Girl Scouts may consider applying for the American Youth Leadership Program, which offers the chance for award recipients to travel abroad on a 3-4 week exchange program, allowing them to gain personal knowledge of foreign cultures. Application deadlines vary according to recruitment areas.

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program offers the opportunity for award recipients to spend a semester or an entire year abroad in countries such as Indonesia, India, Ghana, Egypt, Bosnia, Mali, Malaysia, Oman, Morocco, Turkey or Thailand. Program participants will live with a host family, engage in activities that will help them to learn about the values and society of their host country, attend school, help educate others about their American culture and acquire leadership skills. The deadline to apply is mid-January.

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth offers several scholarships which allow high school students to study foreign languages in the countries in which those languages are actually spoken. Sponsored through a multi-agency effort, the goal of this program is to improve the ability of Americans to communicate with foreign language speakers from around the world. The program focuses on providing opportunities in countries where Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, Korean and Russian are spoken. Six eight-week summer programs are offered. The deadline to apply for this program is November 3rd.

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program was founded in 1983 with the goal of celebrating a friendship between America and Germany, based on shared democratic values. Students selected to participate in this program will live with host families for an entire academic year, participate in community life and attend school. Application deadlines for this program vary.

Girl Scout scholarships are also available for graduating seniors. These scouting scholarships include the Sara and Lawrence Phillips Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship. There are 10 scholarships available through this program. In addition, one scholarship is available through the Gold Award Scholarship in Honor of Marilynn Carr. To be eligible, girls must have earned their Girl Scout Gold Award. The scholarships are worth $1,000 each. Finalists are selected based on interviews. Semi-finalists will receive a $200 savings bond scholarship. Three additional scholarships are also funded through the Alpha Phi Omega Chapter of Georgetown University. The deadline to apply is March 15th.

The GE-Regan Foundation Scholarship Program has been established as a way of honoring the legacy and character of our country’s 40th President. This scholarship program offers financial assistants to students who demonstrate integrity, leadership and citizenship. Approximately 20 scholars are selected each year to receive a $10,000 scholarship. These scouting scholarships are renewable for an additional three years, totaling $40,000 per recipient. The deadline to apply is February 17th.

The Elks National Foundation MVS Scholarships may also be of interest to Girl Scouts, as awards are based on leadership and financial need. A total of 500 scholarships are awarded annually. These four-year scout scholarships vary from $4,000 to $60,000. The deadline to apply is December 2nd.

The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarships is provided as a way of preserving the memory of Corrine Schillings, who died at only 26 years of age in 2004 during the Baltimore Water Taxi accident. Candidates must have earned the Girl Scout Silver or Gold Award to qualify and must also have plans to major or minor in a foreign language. This scholarship is renewable. In addition, the foundation offers a grant that provides for a stipend for students who have earned the Gold or Silver Award to study abroad. This is a one-time grant and is not renewable.

Trinity University has partnered with Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital to offer merit scholarships and grants as a way of celebrating the achievements of women and encouraging girls to pursue their dreams through education. Scholarships and grants are available to both Girl Scouts and Troop Leaders who have plans to attend Trinity University. The Girl Scouts Leadership Scholarship for Gold Awards is worth $5,000 while the Girl Scouts Leadership Scholarship for Silver Awards is worth $4,000. The Girl Scouts Leadership Scholarship has a value of $3,000. The Troop Leader Grant is worth $1,000. Scholarships are renewable annually.

The GSUSA National Young Women of Distinction Award is given to ten Girl Scout Gold Award recipients each year. To be eligible, candidates must have a final project which demonstrate extraordinary leadership and which also has a sustainable and measurable impact while also addressing a local challenge related to a global or national issue. Scholarship values may vary, but are typically around $3,000 each.

The American Legion Auxiliary offers one of the most extensive scholarship programs for Girl Scouts.  Scholarships for Girl Scouts are offered at the National and Department levels and several units also offer scholarships which would be perfect for Girl Scouts.

The VFW Scout of the Year Award is given annually. 2012 is the first year that this award will be available to Girl Scouts. Candidates must be at least 15 years of age and must have earned the Gold Award to be eligible for this scholarship. Three students will be selected to receive national awards. Values of these awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 each. Applications must be received by no later than March 1st.

The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting also offers two scholarships for Girl Scouts. One recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship, while the runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship. The scholarships are awarded based on scholastic achievement, community activism, school and church involvement and Scouting.
